Day Four:  Timbergreen Forestry

The Day of the Kilns, Planer, Tongues & Grooves.

On Thursday Jim collected some 1" kiln dried birch boards from his storage building and we used his edger to produce 2 3/4, 3 3/4, and 4 3/4 boards for the planer/moulder.  We then made tongue and groove flooring.  We also used his resaw to produce 4/4 boards from cants cut Wednesday and placed the boards in the kiln.

-- Wallace Baird (my dad)

What is this?  Well, Jim was going to be interviewed by a magazine and they wanted a good picture of him.  Jim, Elizabeth & I brainstormed and came up with this.  This picture is to illustrate how the small landowner (Jim in picture) can really make a big bag of dough and cut out the middlemen.   That's who the Bairds represent.  From left:  Frances is Mrs Eve L. Logging Companies, I'm from Humongoid Lumber Inc, Elizabeth is the sweet yet backhanded Big Boxed Floored store representative & dad is from Greedacious Flooring Installers Inc.    This is our final moments....

So by now, you can see...we're having a good time and learning a lot!

We took several shots just playing around.  In this one, we - the Bairds - represent the different steps.  In other words, he's not trying to cut us out! After the fake magazine shoot, we went back to work.  Here is Eliz & Jim loading one of his solar kilns.

Oh Yeah, nice pile of lumber growing here. Just in case you wanted to see that nice pile of potential flooring boards again!  I smell green and it ain't trees....LUNCH BREAK

After lunch, we brought a little trailer full of wood from Jim's kilns.  We fed this through the planer molder to create the wood on the right.

We pass the wood on the left through the unpictured planer/moulder to create the wood above.  The planer/molder cuts the tongue & the groove at the same time.

This tongue groove part was actually a lengthy process because he taught us a lot about the machine.  We have the same machine so this was fantastic.

My dad's Major Professor from graduate school at Wisconsin and his wife came and took us out to eat.  Great meal & Professors Larry & June Dahl picked up the tab!

After supper Elizabeth & I went back to the workshop.  Here she is choosing the types of wood for a cutting board.

My cutting board is nearly finished.

Wow...what a great day!  A lot of cool things happened this day.  What a time!

Pictured above is a cool metal statue outside of Jim's house.  It is the work of a local artist.
