Timbergreen Day Three (9/16/2005):

Sawing boards for flooring, Solar Kilns, stacking lumber, and some other Stuff we did!

HAVING A VERY GOOD TIME.

First thing in the morning, Shawn (Jim's girlfriend) is making pens in Jim's workshop. I was very curious about this. She makes a block with a hole in it (picture on left) to be held on the lathe (above)

Elizabeth immediately wanted to learn this.  She made some beautiful pens.  She had never used a lathe before. Above is the beginnings of a wood kaleidoscope.  We were getting exposed to more & more stuff.

This is the close to finished exterior of the kaleidoscope.

Mom & Dad in Jim's workshop

Seuss-like dust collection system.  Works great and is fun to watch as the tubes move around but don't get kinked or stuck.

Oh Yeah!  Cutting flooring boards.  This is after lunch and Jim has changed shirts.  Mom is checking out the edger.

BREAK FOR LUNCH. I took the opportunity to take some more photos of his floors and furnishings.  This is his office floor

This is in the guest bedroom  floor.  I stayed here.  Not on the floor!...but in the room.

Kitchen center piece.  Got a lot of use.  Mixed species top.  We make cutting boards like this later.

That beautiful stairwell, mixed species table that matches piece pictured on left.  Tile in the kitchen, wood floor most everywhere else.

Mom loves this stuff!  Using the edger here.  Super tool.

Using the forklift on the tractor to load the kiln.

Lookout!..Here comes Thelma & Louise!

Ingenious Kiln design.   Doors move so that the wood doesn't have to.  Sometimes you are air drying.   When that's done you open a hole in the roof of that bay and you slide the plastic door in front.  Voila!  You have a solar kiln.

He can process a good amount of wood through these kilns.  Wow!!!  Jim's Kiln designs have been the subject of  scholarly  papers on solar kilns. Dad & Jim stacking wood.  Notice the stickers to separate the stacks.  Super important!
That night, after dinner, Elizabeth & I went back to the workshop.  Elizabeth worked on her kaleidoscope & pens.  I started a mixed species cutting board pictured above. This one is all glued up.  Have to take the clamps up in an hour or slightly less.  Of course I almost forgot but it didn't ruin the clamps or board.

This is one all glued up.  If you want to learn how we made the cutting boards, click here.
