A pretty and unusual

wood base for bird baths.

Easy, easy, easy.

This was the first one.  We now have three that all have different looking bases.

Bird baths are great for attracting a wider variety birds and helping our feathered singing friends to stay hydrated and clean.  Watching one take a bath is a kick!  Since everything around here seems to be wood or wood related, I just couldn't go with the cement bases.  They last a few years so if you're looking for permanence, go with cement.

Find a distinctive log to use.

For our third wood based bath, I wanted a bent almost reaching type of log.  Sourwoods are usually bent and have thick handsome bark so I think this will make a good birdbath base.   (maybe the sourwood didn't agree...)    To learn about sourwoods try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sourwood

Cut the bent Sourwood and took the above log which I think is enough for 2 bases.

Instructions:  Dig hole (preferably with a post hole digger) about 20 inches deep.  Put small log (I like bent and well barked) in hole.  Find height, lean or level (the look) you want and put dirt around to hold it TIGHT in place.  Then take saw (I used a chainsaw) to cut a level place to put bird bath base.  It took me about 4 tries to get it nice and level.

Blends in nicely, I think.  Notice horseshoe pit in background.
