The Round Clown from the Center of Town

(best if read aloud)

This is the story of a clown

A clown that was round.

A clown that lived

in the center of town...

A clown who wasn't happy...

A clown with a frown.

Wherever he went

since he was a clown kid,

The Round Clown was asked

why he frowned like he did.

"I know clowns should be happy

with a big grin on their face...

but I've never been happy

I just can't find my place.

"From the very first time

that I ever fell down,

I listened for a laugh

but there wasn't a sound

"I knew at that moment

I wasn't like other kid clowns.

"They all laughed and they danced.

Oh the songs they would sing.

but I had no big talent

I couldn't do a clown thing!

"I know I should be happy.

It's what all clowns should be.

All I ever wanted is to make the kids smile

and laugh hee hee hee!

"But my flowers don't squirt,

I can't juggle the rings.

It's just not my talent to do the clown things.

"I can't squeeze in a car.

I can't ride a small bike,

I can't climb a rope ladder,

and elephants - well honestly...

their smell I don't like.

"When I tried to be shot

like a big cannonball,

All that happened

was I got stuck...

I just stayed there - that's all!

"I know it sounds silly

and it doesn't make sense

but I don't even like living in big circus tents!

"I'll never be a fun clown

and that's why I'm down.

I wish I was funny -

but I'm just sad and real round."

On this particular day

in the middle of May,

the round clown was sitting, thinking, frowning ...

wishing for something funny to say.

When a great FLASH! of lighting

came down from the sky

with a loud CRACK! and a SMACK!

and three twisters from on high!

The twisters they morphed,

they changed and they fell

and 3 Happy Head hipsters

emerged from the gale.

Now you've never seen 3 wilder things.

If there is a kingdom of color,

These 3 must be kings!

They landed - you guessed it -

in the center of town,

right smack dab...

in front...

of our frowning round clown.

The Hipsters they stood

and brushed off their cool vests.

Stared at the clown

and smiled with zest!

The clown was surprised...

Should he run?

should he hide?

But before he could move

the Hipsters were by his side.

He nervously asked

"Why are  you here?"

The Three  Hipsters sang in unison:

"To help you my dear!"

"How can you help me?

I'm an unfunny clown.

I'm like a ball with no bounce...

no up just a down."

The 3 Hipsters sang together

"Why are you so sad?"

"Cause I can't make the kids smile"

the clown answered,

"Not even a tad!"

"For you to spread smiles,

you must have one yourself,"

the Hipsters sang,

"But it has to be real

not from a store shelf!

"Smiles are catchy and they come from within.

Searching round corners won't turn up a grin"

Singing together,

the Three Hipsters asked the sad clown:

"What brings you joy?

A Song or a toy?

What made you happy when you were a clown boy."

The clown thought for a moment and said,

"I've always had fun with colorful balloons.

I've always liked dancing to a groovy fun tune.

But what can I do with this stuff?

I'm just a no talent goon!"

"Dear Clown,

you must drop

this self-pitying glop!

  You must think to yourself...

"I know I'm tippity top...

even if I can't do

a big belly-flop

into a bucket from an 80ft drop!"

"Through practice and play,

you'll find your own way

to bring joy to your heart and brighten a day!"

The Clown heard these words and,

though they were tough,

he took what they said and replied:

"You're right -- enough is enough!"

"I'll find my true talent,

I won't rest till I'm done.

I'll get a big bag of balloons

and music that's fun.

"I'll practice and practice

till I shine like the sun.

I feel better already

I won't be outdone!"

And the clown did just that.

He practiced, he played.

Balloons and  fun music

brightened his days.

He made balloon animals

and danced his own jig.

The kids came to see him -

some small and some big.

The children all loved

this silly fun clown.

The Round Clown was so happy

he forgot how to frown!

But he would never forget

that the kind Hipsters had been right.

They had helped him along

and shown him the light.

His happiness spread

like a blanket of shine.

Soon the circus came looking

for this clown they'd left behind.

For sure,

you've seen it many times before -

balloon animals and clowns are now old circus lore.

But the Round Clown was the one

who found this specialness within.

He then spread it to others and that's the moment when...

his life & bright future truly began.
